concepts that determine, define
and control the core structure and
all applications of a brand
(2) a commitment to experimentation

humanity in our work
AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF PRACTICAL
CHECKS AND BALANCES:

solutions that demonstrate humil-
ity and respect for an existing
brand’s history and the practical
realities of its business needs
(6) to maintain a deep under-
standing of design history and the
context of our work within it.

and draftsmanship of the highest
level

MENTORS
Triboro partners David Heasty
and Stefanie Weigler owe a
special debt to designer
Alexander Gelman — who was not
only an employer, mentor and
teacher for both, but ultimately
the matchmaker that brought
them together. His creative
process, including his theory
of design by “Subtraction,”
informs all of Triboro’s work.
Head of the graphic design
department at Penn State, Lanny
Sommese’s teaching style
was made infamous in Chip Kidd’s
bestselling novel The Cheese
Monkeys. For Triboro partner
David Heasty, Sommese was
tremendously influential and his
teaching has informed the Triboro
process on every project to
this day. A forthcoming volume
of Sommese’s work will be
available in early 2009.
